I have to admit… sometimes I spell it like that without thinking. I don’t know why.
I guess it’s because the “-ey” suffix is so rarely pronounced as “ee”. Usually, if you want an “ee” sound, you just use a “y” by itself, and “-ey” is more commonly used for the “ay” sound.
Or something like that.
