Rock out with your cocks out, Amish. If only society could learn from you.
(I’m talking about their response, not their religious values!)
Their lack of blame and willingness to forgive is pretty admirable, but their fatalist attitude about things totally creeps me out.
“We think it’s all in God’s hand,” King said. “If this wouldn’t have happened, something still would have happened … because their time was up. God’s hand was in control.”
That just sends chills down my spine – there has to be SOME accountability, or else someone could easily justify indiscriminate killing as performing God’s will.
I think their aversion to things like technology and the sort are probably part of the same attitude – the attitude that they shouldn’t meddle in those sorts of affairs, and let God be in charge of anything that isn’t life-threatening.
In other words, I don’t think anyone in the Amish mindset would take it upon themselves to do God’s work.
You’re right, but it still creeps me out.
I think I speak for everyone when I say I haven’t trusted the Amish since that X-Files episode where some Amish-like people turned out to be able to switch genders and have supernatural pheremones that could turn on anyone but then killed them.
wow. that is awesome. i hope i could be as forgiving as they are.
. . . the only way their response is possible is *because* of their religious values.
I understand that, but I’d like to think that one can respond in such a way without having those religious values.
Hai. But reality and well-wishing are two different things. I’d like to have all who identify themselves as Christians actually behave as such *coughNeoConscough* but I know it won’t happen.
There are greater things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophies. . . and greater evil that lurks in the hearts of men than we shall ever know – the Military Commissions Act of 2006 notwithstanding.
That article was awesome.
“These fantastic Amish people, in a surprising response, actually claimed forgiveness for the shooter as opposed to many other parents’ possible angry response. And in case you didn’t know: Amish don’t like electricity! No cars? CRAZY!”
Yeah yeah. I stopped reading after a few paragraphs since I knew the rest was just educating people about how weeeeiird Amish are.
I don’t get how this is a positive article at all. “Yeah, we Amish will just forgive this bastard because if the girls hadn’t been killed, god would have done something anyway. It’s all in gods hands”. That’s how I interpreted their quote.
No, the killer deserves to die for shooting innocent children. Let the Amish think what they want, but the man should never be forgiven.
Christ himself couldn’t have said it better!
Uhh the guy actually killed himself right after he killed a few other people.
duuuh. I know that. that’s why I said “die”. He did die. As in, the cowardly asshole shot himself. I just wish I could have shot him instead.
