Are you trying to get it out of your head? And if so, are you trying to drive it out of your head by listening to something even more insidious?
Scott Kurtz did an arc about it in PvP many moons ago. I found informative and useful not only in driving anoying songs out of my head, but making people stop humming annoying songs. Good songs for that are Yellow Submarine, National Anthems(any patriotic tunes really) and Holiday songs. Personally, I find ‘Henry the Eighth ‘ by Herman’s Hermits to be effective in driving out unwanted riffs.
But if that’s not working you could always ‘sample’ Discovery and write a rap song around it… or a pop song.
Or work around the riff and make it something of your own. David Bowie did it with ‘My Way’ on ‘Life on Mars’ and I remarked the other day how much Greenday’s ‘Good Riddance/Time of your Life’ owes to good ol’ ‘Yesterday’ by the Beatles(Paul McCartney).
Yeah. Thing is, I don’t want them out of my head. I actually want to create music LIKE theirs. It’s just that I can’t think of anything else when I’m listening to it. I’ve found that Hanson’s MMMBop gets everything else out of my head when I hear it.
