And, overnight, most of my files reappeared during a chkdsk. Not even GetDataBack could find them, but chkdsk did the trick.
This is some freaky shit.

sup mac os x.
Sup hardware problems.
(Macs use the same kinds of hard drives and have the same sorts of recovery tools – which, in Windows XP’s case, worked.)
Ghosts took them!
XP has a copy of teh file table stored on a different part of the disk than the usual table. It also has teh fancy pants journaling and such. It is fairly good at basic file essplosion. If you don’t, however, get a diagnostic program to check your ram and that your HD is reading and writing to every bit correctly I’ll have to laugh my ass off when all of your files fly out the window again.
I bought myself an external hard drive and am planning on doing weekly backups.

You had a massive hiccup in what should be a smooth process. Something, most likely hardware, is becoming fatigued. You should probably find out what it is.
Be wary: Chkdsk may think that they’re all back, but many of them may be incomplete. I lost a lot of mp3s that way, they looked liek they were all back, but they all had chunks missing.
True, that’s the way a lot of them are. I’ll be torrenting a lot of replacements.
In the meantime, I’ve bought an external USB/eSATA drive and plan on weekly backups of my storage drive.
