I have upgraded most components of my computer!

Athlon 64 X2 4200+
2GB PC2-5300 DDR2 RAM
GeForce 7800 GT
Staying the same, for now:
80GB 7200RPM PATA
250GB 7200RPM PATA
CD-RW/DVD-ROM PATA
DVD-RW PATA
Ultra X-Connect 500W PSU
The case, floppy drive, fans, etc…
I ran into no problems upgrading, and all Windows complained about was that it needed to re-activate due to massive hardware change (which was, of course, fine – I’m legal and all).
The only thing I noticed was that I didn’t have the correct power cord for my PCI-Express card… but since my power supply is modular, I simply ordered the extra cable, which should be here in a few days. Until then, my video card is running at lower power, so I don’t get to test it out its full capabilities… but that day will soon arrive!
Oh BTW Sophie any more news about the monitor? I am totally set to pick it up wheneverz, so hit me up about the details.
How much did that all go for? My computer is falling apart (it keeps thinking I’ve just installed windows and won’t let me change any settings no matter what I do) and I need to get…new…everything…I guess.
And why in the world do you have legal windows? =P
The new stuff went for $700 (which was about the price of the entire computer three years ago).
$80 for the motherboard
$180 for the processor
$200 for the video card
$180 for the memory
And tax, shipping, etc.
I have legal Windows XP Pro because the engineering department at UCSC gave me a license. I also have two certificates of authenticity for Windows XP Home, but I use Pro on both my machines… my laptop’s OS is, how you say, “not genuine.”
Oh yeah, my engineering dept gives licenses too…I don’t use it cause i prefer the hacked versions (stripped of annoying stuff like wmp, auto updates, etc)…
I built a comp for my gf last month or so for $400 (after shipping), which was better than the computer I built for myself for $800 3 years ago…

you know, I thought about upgrading my computer, but come december, I’m just going to get a Nintendo Wii and use my laptop. I have absoltely no reason to have a mammoth processing behemoth, All I need to do is check my e-mail, read the internet, and play videogames.

This is really overkill for me too – hopefully it will last me for, say, five years.
I don’t plan on doing much computer gaming either, and, uh, I already have a nice laptop… the reason I got all this new stuff was simply because of a minor electrical problem on my previous motherboard that would make the DVI flicker at times. But to replace the motherboard, I had to get all these new parts… so I decided I might as well make the most of it.
The monitor is up at my house in Marin. If you want to pick it up within the week, call my parents? (415) 488 4749… otherwise I’m coming up Friday night and we can arrange a meet up.
Hmm… I’m busy this evening and tomorrow evening, so maybe Friday night or some time during the weekend would be better. How long are you going to be up here?
Sounds awesome. Any word on the fate of your old components…if you’re gonna throw ’em out or give ’em away, I’d be totally down to take ’em.
I’ve been looking for different ways of getting rid of my components, and I think I might want to sell a few of ’em for really cheap. If you’d like my motherboard (which is busted) then that’s cool, but otherwise I think I’ll try selling my processor, heatsink, memory and video card.
