Turns out the problem I was having before was with the video card, which has since then decided to stop working completely. :[ Farewell, GeForce FX 5700. Now I’m back to a single-monitor GeForce4 MX 440.
So I’m thinking of getting this, which is even more low-end, but at least supports dual monitors.
Or… um. Hey RTF, can you contact me? You’ve got my video card and I was wondering if we could make some sort of trade…
It might not work to run it alongside an NV card, but I still have a Radeon 9200 PCI sitting unused. Want to try that first?
IIRC the reason I wasn’t using that was because of poor Linux support, but I started running dual-boot again last quarter so it doesn’t matter anymore, I just don’t feel like making any changes. Or maybe I could call this an incentive to upgrade.
Well, what’s your situation in terms of monitors and such? The video card I have, the GeForce4 MX 440, is less powerful than the GeForce FX 5200 you have, but it’s still completely fine for desktop computing. It’s just got a VGA port… and S-Video.
The question is, what ports are you using? Do you have two monitors? Or does your one monitor just use DVI? If you’re just using VGA I’m sure you won’t really find much difference at all.
As for using a PCI for one and AGP for the other – I don’t think mixing ATI and nVidia is a good idea, especially since I use nVidia’s drivers for window positioning and other effects. Thanks for the offer, though.
If your situation is fine in that you’d be all right with my MX 440, perhaps I can come over some time soon and make the trade.
I’m only using one monitor, VGA. And the card I have isn’t a 5200, it’s an MX4000 with a 5200 box. (you should still have that 5200, I think)
Anyway, I’m up for trading anytime this weekend.
…ohhhhhhh. Okay, okay. I guess I gave that 5200 to someone else then. All right.
But the MX4000 does have VGA and DVI, right? I’m drawing a blank but I’m pretty sure it was dual-monitor. And is some time today all right?
yes and yes, though I might go out this evening. I’d IM you but I’ve been having connection problems for some reason. Crown apt. #111 is the place.
All right. Then I guess I will head over – got some productivity issues with my current setup anyway, so there’s no reason for me to wait. I will bring over my video card in a anti-static case, and we can do the switch when I arrive.
Heading out pretty soon, but if you get this before I leave – what’s your room/cell phone number? Mine is 415-342-7612
