Having been on the Internet for a while I've come to discover the rate at which memes spread. I know where they're found, who spreads them, and usually how long it takes to reach certain demographics. I try not to exercise any sense of superiority when it turns out I've found about some quirky or downright hilarious media long before anyone else has - but I try to create awareness about things I find anyway, so I can spread the word about things I find worth mentioning - or at least I can say I was there before the thing got completely blown out of proportion. My comic, CAR, was just a daily outlet for me - I wasn't really doing it for anyone but myself, so I didn't care too much about the quality of the work (hence the copy-paste nature of the strip) - but I still had fans and people getting laughs out of it. Since a few other webcomics I had read were making comics about this new film - Overcompensating by Jeffrey Rowland and Diesel Sweeties by Rich Stevens, to name a few - I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and try to contribute my two cents. But due to lack of creativity on my part and utter absurdity of the subject itself, I couldn't think of anything. So I guess this comic is one of the few cases where I really just mention something for the sake of riding on its own value - at least in my opinion, I'm not adding anything of humorous value to Snakes on a Plane - but just mentioning it because it's just such a strange phenomenon, and I really just wanted to get it out of the way since I was sure I would hear a whole bunch about it in the coming year. And of course, I was right. Now there's bootleg Snakes on a Plane merchandise, endless parodies, random people at my university screaming "MOTHERFUCKING SNAKES ON A PLANE!", and more, all much to my chagrin. Personally I still plan on seeing the movie, but even at the time of making the strip in the summer of 2005 I was already so burnt out on Snakes on a Plane jokes that it's not all that funny to me anymore. I guess that's the problem with Internet "superiority."
