WELL

I stayed up until 4 AM flashing my iPhone’s firmware with an Installer application, installing an SSH server, butchering a sound file from Our Man Flint, and uploading it over WinSCP back to my iPhone, all so I could have THIS as my ringtone!
I AM VICTORIOUS!!!

  1. Isn’t the fact that the phone doesn’t let you set any old Mp3 you want as the ringtone out of the box sort of ridiculous?
I mean I won’t argue that it’s a very nice piece of technology, but that just seems sort of ridiculous.

    1. Just this past day iTunes announced that not only can you only make ringtones out of songs you’ve already bought, but you have to pay an extra $1.98 to do so… AND the capability to do so is only available for a very select number of iTunes tracks.
Yes the iPhone is ridiculously restrictive but to tell the truth I don’t think most people mind that much, I mean come on, it’s just a fucking ringtone. For the people who want to go the extra mile and mess around with the innards, Apple’s been a lot less vigilant about protecting against those sorts of inevitabilities than, say, Microsoft.

      1. Man that’s just nuts.
I sort of look at the iPhone the same way I do the PSP – it’s pretty much useless on its own, but it’s extremely powerful (or potentially extremely powerful) when you factor in mods and homebrew into the equation. They crammed a full-blown computer in there, they just don’t let you use all of it.
After the recent price drop, I really think the price is pretty reasonable when you consider how powerful it is.
I’m looking forward to what the modding community’s able to come up with for the iPod touch, since I’m not really in the market for a phone/

  2. You could have tricked iTunes 7.4.1 into thinking you have a ringtone. There’s a tutorial around about it. But I congratulate you for hacking your phone.
There’s a way to tether your computer to use the iPhone’s EDGE connection. That’s always fun. I’m not sure how to do it for Windows, though. Let me know if you wanna try. I’ll try to figure it out.
