DQIX on DS?

Wow so it seems that Dragon Quest IX will be released solely as a Nintendo DS game.
I don’t find that TOO surprising, seeing as VIII was the only one in the series that didn’t use pixel-based sprites. As much as I really enjoyed VIII’s graphics, orchestral score, and voice acting, maybe it will be more like VII – pixel-based sprites and polygonal backgrounds.
And besides. Wii? Too gimmicky. PS3? Not popular enough. Xbox 360? No one plays that in Japan.

  1. Wii is too gimmicky? I think it’s just very easy to make things gimmicky on Wii. But you can also make things that are extraordinarily non-gimmicky and very fun.

    1. Yeah… it might also be that if DQ is going to go the epic giant budget route, it’ll go with the PS3 since it’s, well, more powerful, and prone to having higher-budget stuff on it. Wii in this case is more kind of middle ground.
I know, it’s not such a great argument. I’ve been playing Zelda and despite the aiming bits I find it fine. I can put my hands at my side and play a video game. It’s great!

  2. When the DS came out, at first everyone thought it was going to be too gimmicky for a “normal” game, and for awhile it was. After everyone got used to the shock and awe of two glorious screens and one they could touch, though, game developers stopped feeling like they had to awkwardly cram that functionality in there. I’m sure it’ll be the same for the Wii sooner or later.
But yeah, I for as nice as VIII looked, I really thought VII shined more in the gameplay department and just plain had more charm than VIII did. It’s my favorite game in the series, and it’d be really cool to have a DQ7-style game for the DS.

    1. Yeah, I’ve argued against the Wii being gimmicky for a long time so I sort of take back what I said. When the PS2 came out people tried making pressure-sensitive games for it. And with the DS… well… Metroid. That was hell to try to play.
But now there’s awesome PS2 stuff that doesn’t use much more than PS1 supplied and there’s awesome DS stuff that doesn’t use the upper screen and touch functionality much at all! (read: FF3)

        1. ugh I couldn’t play that one either.
The Bouncer was the other game I knew of that had pressure sensitivity. There were two different attacks per button depending on whether you applied pressure or not.
I heard someone say that Okami is pressure-sensitive but I’m playing it now and it doesn’t seem so at all.

  3. Development could’ve easily gone on the Wii. Remember, not every game has to use the ‘Mote-Nunchuk combo. I know for a fact that Super Smash Bros. Brawl won’t be using it (the lead developer said so himself in an interview) meaning a more likely option will be the use of the Classic Controller for it. Why Square-Enix didn’t go this route is a real surprise to me…
